Want to get your home updated for the current age? Here are 5 must have home items that will make your space more functional, design-friendly and on trend:
1. Amazon Echo
For those of you who are into fun gadgets, the Amazon Echo is a must for your home. The Amazon Echo is a smart speaker developed by the folks over at Amazon. But really, it’s so much more than that.
The Echo is shaped like a cylinder which creates “immersive, 360° omni-directional audio” and fills your room with sound from every angle. The Echo also connects with all of your music apps, including Amazon Music, Pandora, Spotify and iHeartRadio.
But the real kicker with the Echo is that it comes equipped with Alexa, Amazon’s “virtual personal assistant”. Alexa uses voice recognition to recognize your commands, making the Echo completely hands free.
Want to get down to some Billy Joel? Just say “Alexa, play Uptown Girl” and within seconds, you’ll hear your song of choice coming from the speaker.
And even better, the Echo does a lot more than play music. You can tell Alexa to order you items from Amazon, get you an Uber or order you a pizza from Dominos. And all for a $179.99 price tag.
And if that seems like too much of an investment for you, be sure to check out the Echo Dot, which is smaller but has similar functionality and comes in right under $50.
2. A Conversation Piece
Every home should have at least one piece that sparks a conversation. While it’s fine to furnish the bulk of your home with traditional pieces, you want to have at least one piece of furniture, art or decor that stands out and makes a statement.
What your conversation piece actually is will depend completely on your style and what feels impactful to you. Maybe it’s a piece of art you picked up on a recent trip to Bali. Maybe it’s a coffee table or ottoman carved out of a tree trunk. Or maybe it’s a couch made out of an interesting or unusual fabric, like velvet.
Choose whatever feels true to your style and personality, but be sure to have at least one piece in your home that makes your guest say “Wow, that’s so interesting! Where did you get that?!”
3. A Gallon of Greenery
No home would be complete without a touch of Greenery – Greenery paint, that is. With the qualities of blue and yellow, green has a unique effect of being both relaxing and revitalizing. This makes it a versatile color scheme for nearly any room. If a full wall feels like too much, you can incorporate green in your decor; a Greenery chair or throw pillows would be a great addition to any room.
4. Actual Greenery
While we’re on the topic of greenery, adding ACTUAL greenery to your home is always a must.
The health benefits of keeping plants in your home are impressive: they provide cleaner air and better air quality, lower your risk of illness, help to improve memory and concentration and give a nice boost to your mood. And from a design standpoint when used in a strategic way adding greenery to a room can actually enhance your design and pull everything together.
To incorporate greenery into your space, try adding a potted tree to the corner of your living room or hanging plants along the windows in your kitchen. You can also use smaller plants, like cacti, succulents, or florals, on spaces like side tables or nightstands.
Just remember – greenery is alive, so make sure you take proper care of them, lest you find yourself with a home chock full of dead plants (which isn’t a good look for anyone).
5. A Cozy Throw
Hygge. You’ve probably never heard of it, but it’s shaping up to be quite a big lifestyle and design trend.
So what exactly is hygge? Hygge (pronounced “hoo-ga”) is a Danish lifestyle trend that can’t be directly translated to English, but basically encompasses all things cozy. Danes (who are consistently rated as the happiest in the world) frequently get together with their loved ones to enjoy warm tea, cozy blankets and relaxing conversations by the fire: all fine examples of hygge. And this concept of “cozy contentment” is set to explode around the world – in both lifestyle and design.
A great way to incorporate hygge into your design is with a luxurious, soft, cozy throw. Toss it over your couch or a chair, then grab it and wrap yourself up in it on chilly winter nights.
Now that you know what you need to get on trend, time to get shopping!
